Ep #43 Entrepreneurship: How Small thinking can Stifle Your Expansion

Most entrepreneurs have experienced the frustration of moving three steps forwards and three or even four steps back. There are some commonly found limiting mindsets that stop us from excelling, in a way we know we can. In this episode we address four of them:

 

Vanity Marketing

This can be mistaken for PR, the difference is the only increase you'll see will be the size of your ego. Or on the other hand, is what others say about you. Any form of marketing that focuses on improving your view of yourself will not attract customers. You may have an audience but they're there to admire, gawk and wonder how you got there. They are not there to buy from you.

 

Embellishing yourself

Many of us are guilty of this. We believe our potential clients have an expectation of who we are., so we carve out an image and force-fit ourselves into it. This is the opposite of authenticity and is rooted in the lack of awareness of the amazing gift you carry.

 

Revelling in your wins

This is when you stay too long at a place of success, and you miss the opportunities that pass by. Celebrate your successes but don't build an altar and worship them.

 

Emotional attachment

When I lost my business, every thought and idea grew from the ashes of the old. I could not divorce myself from the past because I was emotionally invested in it. You may have infused blood, sweat and tears into a venture but if it is no longer serving its purpose you have to let it go. Some businesses exist to train and prepare us for the next, but if your emotions lead you, you will not recognise this.

Ep #42 Entrepreneurship: Big Vision, Low Budget

What do you do when you have a sizeable vision, but your resources do not stretch far enough for you to manifest it?

 

No one starts a business with the intention of it not growing- at least no one I know. For the most part, we start off with the hope that this new venture will grow into what we have imagined, but the resources don't always match the size of our dream.

When I started my company 13 years ago, that was the situation. I had a big vision and zero budget for it to materialise so I had to discover other forms of capital.

In this episode, I share some non-traditional tips on how to manifest your big business vision on a low budget. I warn you that my suggestions may appear counterproductive initially, but trust me on this.

A mindset change is needed to enable you to see the benefits of making decisions that will yield results later, as opposed to ones that will fulfil your immediate requirements.

Of all the tips I share, Right Pricing and Telling a Compelling Story are my faves.

Ep #41 Entrepreneurship: Tackling the Confidence Gap

If there is one trait that entrepreneurs require, it is confidence. Amongst many, of course. Without confidence, you will struggle to cultivate and exercise other strengths.

As a business owner, you need the confidence to make decisions, take risks, be creative. 

So what does one do when that belief in yourself is lacking?

In this episode we look at the importance of using your intuition which is your internal GPS to guide you in business. We also look at an external GPS, using a mentor to help you on your journey.

Ep #40 The Truth About Entrepreneurship is...

Entrepreneurship is one of the sexiest words out there- but the truth? The reality is different from its appearance.

We see posts of men and women living the 'laptop lifestyle', working from some of the finest places in the world and then wonder how we will arrive there. Let's not forget those who post their seven-figure sales numbers that were achieved in a month or two.

It becomes easy to see why as a business owner, discouragement quickly becomes your companion.

 

In this episode, I share a typical journey of starting a business. I also speak on two obstacles I came across in my early years as a business owner, and how I overcame them. Growing a business with nothing but determination and grit is different from growing one when you have options and a safety net.

Ep #39 Got Impostor Syndrome? Rewrite Your Story for Success

No two people were born with identical seeds in them. And by seeds, I am referring to the fulness of who you really are. Your purpose, personality, gifts and proclivities all squeezed into a seed, no two people were born with identical seeds.

 

And yet we find ourselves comparing ourselves with others- because we don't 'feel' like the success others see in us. Or we deliberately dumb down our achievements as we shrink under the admiration or recognition of others.

 

Impostor syndrome is a real state of being that occurs in men and women, but more in women. It is when you feel like a fraud and refuse to accept ownership of your achievements- despite the evidence that you are responsible.

 

There are circumstances and mindsets that create an ideal space for Impostor Syndrome to thrive and in this episode, we look at three of them.

 

And just in case you don't believe it's that serious, I share three dangers of not managing it.

Does faith play a role in future living? 

Hindsight they say is 20/20. Another quote says Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards. 

In this episode I talk about how my Christian faith helps me to trust the unseen and live as though I have 20/20 foresight.

You can shape your future through prayer and expectation- not the stoic, monk-like type of prayers, but through open communication with an unseen God. 

I share three ways in which you can use prayer to create your tomorrow.; one of which is understanding worthiness. This one came right out of my being scammed by an electrician two years ago.

I also talk about why we should not pray for healing.

Ep#37 Future is an Attitude

In this episode, we draw life lessons from the car manufacturer, Audi.

 

Audi's current marketing slogan is Future is an Attitude. Once you choose to draw strength and inspiration from things that are yet to happen, you must have the right outlook to be able to do so. Future-mindedness is not an occasional event that we dip into as needed, but it is a perspective from which we will now view all of life from.

 

There are threats to this way of living and we explore four of the most common ones, like living for recognition. The way society is set up and the point at which many cultures are at present happens to be fertile ground for this threat to thrive. You will be forgiven if you have chased recognition thinking it was success. I also share practical ways to recalibrate our thinking.

Ep #36 The Future is Superior to the Present

The Future is Superior to the Present.

What do you do when you are working towards a beautiful future, but the present gives you no indication that you will arrive there? We are constantly searching for evidence that our hopes or fears are legitimate.

 

Great if you find proof that you can achieve what you hope for although that's never enough to keep you going till the end. If, however, your fears are confirmed, the discovery can paralyse you and keep you from pressing forward.

 

Learning to draw inspiration and strength from the future takes effort and it begins with adopting the mindset that the future is superior to the present. This then frees you to think in terms of a better future, and not a limiting present situation.

 

In this episode I share three affirmations that helped me press forward when fear and discouragement paralysed me last week:

 

My future is superior to and even more beautiful than my past. Because when your present situation looks hopeless, you need something to pull you forward into a better place.

 

I have everything In need inside me, to become all God created me to be. Because when we can't see the resources to build our future are we need to look inside us.

 

I do not make emotional decisions Because our emotions are transient and unreliable; an emotional decision might offer immediate relief but cause long term problems.

Ep #35 Starting over: Life after Setbacks

"You can't live in the past!'

Some pieces of advice are easier said than practised. We all know (on paper) not to live in the past but it can be incredibly difficult to implement. Especially if as far as you can see, your past was more pleasant than your present, and your future isn't promising either.

 

Living in the past can be precarious because it keeps you stagnant. Stationary people are not exempt from having big dreams and those desires will remain just that. So how can you move forward if a setback has kept you stuck?

 

In this episode, I share my thoughts on being future-minded. Future-mindedness does not mean ignoring the present or pretending the past did not happen. Rather it is choosing to be inspired by God's promise of a beautiful future- even if you can't see any evidence of that.

 

When we spend time recreating good feelings, we can remain tethered to the past; we tend to do this during or after a setback.

 

I also share practical tips on propelling forward after life has kept you grounded.

Ep #34 Beyond the Quit: Fighting for your Dream

Have you given up on a dream- but the dream has refused to give up on you?

 

In this episode, I continue the story of Sue Yellowtail, a woman who came face to face with a cougar in the wild. Her story is remarkable as we are able to see the Fear Response play out throughout her ordeal, and we look at the Fright and Fight responses.

 

Why the fear response?

Because psychologists tell us that the brain can't always tell the difference between real and imagined fear, so the response to that new opportunity or audacious goal is the same as if you were meeting a lion in the wild. Your response is survival. Survival from the danger of failure. The toil of hard work, the pain of uncertainty and inadequacy.

 

By understanding how the brain works when it encounters a threat, like a cougar in the wild, we can understand and navigate our response to the opportunities we are too scared to take.

 

The fright stage is the giving-up stage. The 'everybody's got to die sometime' stage. It's the point when you can't find any visible evidence of your chance of survival. It is the quitting stage. But that's not really the end. 

 

The fight stage is when you are at that place where you are prepared to die fighting for your dream.  It is the point you arrive at and say I've got to kill this animal or it's going to kill me.

 

More importantly, we did cover that when an animal gives up and appears dead, it isn't necessarily the end. Listen to learn about the window of opportunity life gives us to revive our dream.
